Aug '08 HANNAN/HANNON, MORSE, BOYNTON, LERMOND, MARRINER friends and neighbors.
Belmont, Maine Backyard Reunion
Saturday - 9 August 2008 In the backyard of Bob & Isabel Morse Maresh 169 Howard Road - Belmont, ME 04952 It’s reunion time in Maine. The annual Backyard Reunion, in the Town of Belmont, Waldo County, Maine will be held in Saturday this year [previously been held on a Sunday], August 9, 2008, at the home of Bob and Isabel Morse Maresh. The event starts at midday. You are asked to bring a pot-luck dish of food for the table. Drinks, coffee, tea, potato salad, baked beans, plastic eating utensils, plates and cups are provided. Also bring a chair to sit on, and an item for the fun auction which is held each year to raise money for expenses. Unless it is pouring rain, the reunion will be held. We have multiple canopies and a deck on which the elder relatives can sit. Also consider bringing family photos to be scanned, family history, scrapbooks, clippings which can be photocopied to add to the family data. If you have photos of previous reunions, we would also like to make copies of them. Bring an item for “Show and Tell”. Bring Gramma, Grampa, aunts, uncles and cousins by the dozens. Come out and visit your relatives. If you don’t think that you are related, come anyway, and be adopted into a large collection of relatives. You’ll have a good time. HISTORY OF THE BACKYARD REUNION In 1994, a group of Hannan/Hannon relatives decided to hold a reunion of the descendants of John Odell Hannan. For many years, there were two reunions of Maine Hannans, each claiming no relation to the others. Research proved that they were all descended from the elusive John Odell Hannan. The event was held at Tranquility Grange Hall in Lincolnville. Descendants came from far and near, bringing their family data, carrying pot-luck dishes of delicious food, and having a very enjoyable time. The next year a handful of Hannan/Hannon descendants met at Sheepscot Lodge in Palermo, Me. Because there was an expense in using the Lodge, the following reunions were held at the home of Bob & Isabel Morse Maresh in Belmont. Some years a large number attended, other years there were but a few. For that reason, in 2001, the Morse line was invited, as many of the attendees were descended from both Hannan/Hannon and Morse. The Morses came “out of the woodwork”, as the saying goes. A Hannan descendant enjoys talking with the Morses, and they enjoy the competitive bidding against each other in the fun auction. In 2002, the Boyntons were added. In 2004, with Maresh son, Peter, serving in Iraq, there was a Patriotic theme to the reunion. A Book of Veterans Remembrance and a large poster of photos of related veterans who had served in the Military in any war was put together. Martin V. B. Hannan, his three brothers and their father all had served in the Civil War and returned, though some had wounds. The Book of Veterans Remembrance continues, if you have a Service photo to add. It had been said by a descendant that only ”hippies and draft dodgers” attended the reunion. We have several who served in World War II, receiving Purple Hearts. We have some who served in Korea, in a ‘Police action’, some in Viet Nam, and some who served when no active fighting was going on, but none the less were protecting our country, and our freedom to meet. We know of least one former “hippie” who is proud to be called that who attends. Some of the Morse sisters, daughters of Fred G. Morse of Rockport, Me. were faithful attendants at the reunion. Evelyn (Morse) Hendrikson, who was ninety-six and her sister Leona (Morse) Wood, aged ninety-four entertained with tales of their life in Belmont and going to Greer’s Corner School nearly three-quarters of a century ago. Evelyn passed away in July of 2007. In 2005, the Lermond descendants were invited, because of the ties to the family. In 2006, ninety-nine and a half-year-old Joseph Lermond and his family came from Nahant, Mass. His gentleness, historical memories and good humor was enjoyed by all who met him. He was so pleased to come back to the area of his father’s youth, and meet with other relatives, including his ninety-six-year-old first cousin, Margaret Robbins of Lincolnville. Joe passed away in the winter of 2007. In 2007, the Marriner descendants were invited. We enjoyed a delightful family from Waldo, and their addition to the family history. Also in 2007, Leona (Morse) Wood once again entertained with her keen memory, and her delicious cooking. Linwood Morse, a faithful attendee with his wife, Barbara, was present. Barbara is always ready to pitch in and help. As Linwood sat in his chair in the backyard, looking out across the field with the cattle grazing, he said, “This is a little bit of Heaven!” Linwood passed away in Dec. of 2007. One of the Morse-Dean descendants and family arrive each year for the reunion, no matter where they have lived in the country. In 2007, they drove from Florida. The 2007 reunion brought an abundance of relatives, with well over one hundred attendees. For several years we’ve had a descendant of the Heal/Heald family enjoying the reunion as a guest. She is related to many who are descendants of all of the stated names of relatives. It seems that we are related to a great many of the citizens of Waldo County in Maine. It is interesting to see generation after generation play in and around the old apple tree in the backyard, another generation playing games, and getting together in another group, those eating under a canopy, and still others under a canopy bidding at the fun auction. Each year we hold a fun auction and a 50-50 raffle to raise money for expenses. For the past two reunions, $100.each year has been donated to Greene Plantation Historical Society Museum Building Fund, an account started to eventually find a home for the thirty years historical and genealogical research and artifacts, gathered by Isabel Morse Maresh. Many of the descendants look forward to attending the annual reunion. You don’t have to be related to attend. After all, we’re all related to each other in one family or another. Come out, eat, laugh, tell tall tales and make memories of your own.
SHIBLES FAMILY REUNION Shibles Family Reunion is scheduled for Saturday Aug. 16 and Sunday the 17 in the IOOF Hall in Warren, located at the junction of U.S. Rt. 1 and ME Rt. 90 in Warren. Registration, coffee and conversation from 9 AM Sat. Light lunch at 11:30. Guided visits to Thomaston area Shibles Historic Sites in the afternoon, followed by Reunion Feast from 4:30 - 6:30.
