Waldo County Plantations


 

A plantation in Maine is an organized form of municipal self-government similar to but with less power than a town or a city. Once difference is that plantations can not make local ordinances. Unlike towns or cities, with few exceptions, this type of municipality usually includes the word Plantation as part of its full name. Plantations are typically found in sparsely populated areas. The term, as used in this sense in modern times, appears to be exclusive to Maine.   The book referenced at the bottom of this page provides a more detailed descriptions of Maine Plantations.  Wikipedia lists the 34 Maine municipalities that are still legally recognized as plantations
