Belmont

Mitchell, H. E. The town register: Lincolnville, Northport, Belmont,
Morrill, Searsmont and Waldo, 1907. Brunswick, Maine, The H. E. Mitchell Co., 1907.

To all who are interested in the History of Belmont, Waldo County, Maine.  The book went to the publishers on 30 Oct. 2002, and will be available to purchase from Higginson Book Co. the last of Dec. 2002.  It is named Belmont, Maine - The First Hundred Years, has 634 pages, with 80+ pages of Every-Name Index with over 20,000 entries.  It is the work of several years by Isabel Morse Maresh of Belmont, Me., originally a part of 'Greene Plantation', named for General Greene of the Revolutionary War. The book includes:  six [6] pages of Belmont maps and explanations; Early Belmont history from various sources and a Timeline; Vital records taken from The Republican Journals, a Belfast newspaper from 1829,consisting of many, many hours of reading microfilms of the newspapers at the Belfast Free Library;  and from town records of surrounding towns, the Census records from 1810 to 1920, inclusive; Cemetery inscriptions from all known Belmont cemeteries; eleven [11] pages of Civil War records taken from the Adjutant General's reports; over 100 pages of interesting newspaper items; and about 100 pages of a Belmont Treasurers' report from 1835 to 1855.  It is the most comprehensive record of Belmont history ever in book form.  Belmont's history has been very obscure.  Since the split from what is now the Town of Morrill, Me. in 1855, Belmont has not had a settled church.  Photos of early Belmont are rare, and almost impossible to find, not like the neighboring towns of Montville, Lincolnville, City of Belfast, and others with a rich photographic history.  It is a must for those with ancestors from Belmont, Maine, and also includes some interesting reading for those who are not involved in genealogy.  The price will be about $60.  For more exacting price, and the cost of shipping, contact Higginson Book Co., 148 Washington St., P. O. Box 778, Salem, MA 01970.  Higginson Book Co. has a Web site, with many local histories and genealogies.
